Introduction to the Graduate Program of Language and the Law, NWUPL

Since recent years the disciplinary subject of Language and the Law has been developing rapidly in China, and its related education has obtained valuable achievements. More and more scholars from linguistic and legal fields have come to our language garden and achieved much by devoting themselves to the study of language and the law.

Encouraged by this, my university-Northwest University of Politics and Law, has worked out the Graduate Progrm of Language and the Law under the Jurisprudence Major, School of Criminal Law. The Program began to enroll graduates in 2008. At present, four graduates, the first group, have been accepted. They have started their research on language and the law.

Fortunately, LIU, Weiming (myself) and LIU, Suzhen (famous researcher in China) have become the graduate supervisors. Now we two supervise two students each.

The International Conference on Forensic Linguistics and the Biennial Conference of the China Association of Forensic Linguistics will be held between November 7th－8th, 2008. Here I'd like to add some information and maybe it'll be useful for you.

1. Prof. Peter French once suggested that Forensic Phonetics should be inculded in this Conference. I told Prof. Du about it the moment I got the info. Now FP has been in the topic list and the language used is both Chinese and English.

2. About keynote speakers. Besides Professor Malcolm Coulthard and Professor Roger Shuy, Dr. Vijay Bhatia (Visiting Professor in the City University of Hong Kong) has also been invited.

3. About the organizer. This Conference is oranized by China Association of Forensic Linguistics (CAFL). So it is the biggest and most important meeting in the field of FL in China. Prof. Du is the Chairman of CAFL. This Conference is sponsored by the Center for Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS). This Center is the key research base of Ministry of Education in China. There are quite a few famous scholars doing thire research there.

4. About accommodation, There is no need to reserve your rooms and food in advance as you do in England, America or somewhere else. The rooms of different types are enough. What you do is to contact the organizer and tell them your needs by email, and when you arrive in Guangzhou you may find everything OK. So there is no need to worry about it.

5. About transportation and travel. Transportation is very convenient. Guangzhou is very close to Hong Kong. You can take the flight to Hong Kong. If you'd like to visit Beijing or Shanghai before the Conference, you can take that flite. It is about two hours flite from Beijing/Shanghai to Guangzhou. Forensic Linguistics in the 21st century: Research and Application.

Invited Plenary Speakers
Professor Malcolm Coulthard: The Founding President of the International Association of Forensic Linguists, and the founding editor of Forensic Linguistics: the International Journal of Language and the Law. He has been commissioned to write reports as an expert witness in over 150 cases and has given evidence in three terrorist trials in Northern Ireland and in a case of academic plagiarism in Hong Kong. He has appeared as an expert twice in the Court of Appeal, including the successful Derek Bentley Appeal when, in 1998, the verdict of guilty was overturned after 46 years. He is now a professor in the Aston University, U.K.

Professor Roger Shuy: Distinguished Research Professor of Linguistics, Emeritus, of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Prof. Shuy is one of the premier experts in the field of forensic linguistics. He has authored thirty books on linguistics, including six on forensic linguistics. Prof. Shuy has also authored hundreds of articles on linguistics, and has testified numerous times as an expert witness in state and federal courts, as well as before Congress.

The 4th National Forensic Linguistics Symposium

The 4th National Forensic Linguistics Symposium was held at East
China University of Politics and Law, Shanghai, China.

From 1 - 3, December, 2006, The 4th National Forensic Linguistics Symposium was held at East China University of Politics and Law, Shanghai, China. Around 80 experts and scholars from universities and judicial institutions were at this Conference.

During the Conference, 8 sessions were arranged for further discussions. The topics in question were various, including legal translation, court interpreting, FL theories and practice. The whole conference was interactive and successful. The Conference was held by ths School of Foreign Languages, East China University of Politics and Law, sponsored by CAFL (China Forensic Linguistics Association).

About Forensic Linguistics Symposium

the Forensic Linguistics Symposium

On Dce.2nd, 2006, the 4th National Symposium of Forensic Linguistics, namely Chinese Forensic Linguistics Researching Conference, had been successfully completed in Songjiang Campus of East China University of Political Science and Law. At the conference, Fu Zhang, chief division of Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council P. R. C, made a speech concerning the process of translation and revision of legal articles. Group discussion about legal translation was anchored by Legislative Affairs Office of Shanghai.

After the conference, those experts taking part in the conference opened their heart to air opinions about instructions and fruits they got from this experience.

Dr. Xinhong Zhang talked about his ideas about this conference in details. In his opinion, there are several important aspects in this symposium. Firstly, the inclusiveness in the members attending the meeting: many attendants are from fields forensic linguistics and law studies and from the legal profession, including respected pioneering experts and specialists, together with persons from governmental departments and a lot of other legal and foreign language schools of universities attended the conference. Therefore, this conference witnessed more and more researchers from both foreign and Chinese language areas being increasingly interested in forensic linguistics. Furthermore, the legal professors are beginning to pay attention to the application of forensic linguistics. What is much more important is that the research topics of forensic linguistics are diversified and enlarged from the mere study in the proper choice of words, sentences and texts of legal articles to the deeper core objects of international forensic linguistics such as courtroom discourse and interpretation .This conference is a large-scale conflation of Chinese and foreign forensic linguistics and the adequate communication between forensic linguistic linguistics field and applied legal field. In all, the great success of the conference will facilitate and exert far-reaching influence on the future development of forensic linguistics in china.

Moreover, an encouraging point of this conference is that Fu Zhang, chief of translation and revision department under Legislative Affairs Office of State Council, P. R. C, led a team of experts active in translation and interpretation from each province to the meeting. Thanks to the long-time support from forensic linguistics and legal translation fields, a platform with significant meanings in theory and practice was completed, which shall lay a solid foundation for the future development of forensic linguistics as an applied discipline. Fu Zhang, young but capable and promising, with attitude for the best and active connection with researchers of universities, will facilitate the training of professionals.

The First Chinese Doctoral Candidates of Forensic Linguistics
Witnessed Their Success in Their Doctorial Oral Defense

On September 29, 2006, the first Chinese doctoral candidates finished their oral defense for their doctorial dissertations in the Demonstration Hall of the Research Center of Arts in Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. The members of the committee are experts from institutes and universities of Hong Kong and Mainland. The audience present includes postgraduate students of forensic linguistics and other orientations.

Guangdong University of Foreign Studies began to enroll doctoral candidates of forensic linguistics in the year of 2002, the first in China’s Mainland. Since the education of these doctoral candidates has drawn extensive support from experts of forensic linguistics and other related fields both at home and abroad, the supervisors of these candidates expressed their most sincere gratitude during the defense ceremony.
